Base 2

The base currently has two class groups, with one group for students on the Autistic Continuum.

The classroom for students with autistic difficulties uses the T.E.A.C.C.H. method of structured learning. This method works by dividing the classroom visually into clear areas e.g. work, snack, and play. Visual instructions are used in combination with language to help the student see as well as hear what is going to happen.

The daily and weekly timetable is displayed visually e.g. using photographs, symbols or words to increase meaning for the students.

The students’ work is also presented in a visual form so that it is clear “how much” is required and when work is “finished” to prevent confusion and anxiety. Visual presentation may be via photographs, symbols or words according to the individual needs of the student.

In Base 2 we aim to establish the school’s expectations for the students. Great emphasis is placed on building relationships with staff and fellow classmates whilst developing sharing, turn taking and friendship skills as the basis for developing respect for students, staff and visitors to the school. Throughout all lessons we aim to give each student a secure start to school life.
